HOW DID MOUSTACHE NATION GET STARTED?

The Moustache Nation has a mythical start that has taken on many variations of tales since its inception.  The true origin of the group itself dates back to Eugene, Oregon in 2001 where a pair of die-hard crews united to become one at both home and away games.  The glorious Stache was experimented with in a prototype phase by a few core individuals at the 2003 USC home game.  It was brought back for the trouncing of Iowa in 2004 and then introduced to the world in 2005 for ASU’s first and only bout with College Gameday when Arizona State hosted USC.  If you look back at the footage you will see a terrific Moustache Nation sign dancing behind Corso for much of the broadcast.  Keep in mind this was also before the sign glutten they have now.  Staches were then ultimately released on the road starting in ’06 at Boulder, which subsequently began a three year winning streak for the Nation, and allowed us to share and celebrate our lip spinach across the country.

HOW DOES ONE JOIN MOUSTACHE NATION?

Moustache Nation is very similar to Fight Club; you essentially have to know a member as all members are one degree of someone else in the crew.  Also a Moustache is mandatory, especially with new recruits.

HOW MANY MEMBERS ARE THERE?

The Nation does not have a fixed number of members, there is certainly a core group that has been around for a while as well as a core group that rallies every year.  In Columbia there were 80 brooms strong.

DO YOU HAVE TO HAVE A STACHE IN ORDER TO BE A MEMBER?

A Stache is mandatory for official annual Moustache Nation tailgate.  There are very few exceptions that are granted for emergency situations like when your employment is in jeopardy.  In which case you are granted a one-year waiver and are expected to have found new employment by the following year.

DO YOU HAVE A STACHE YEARLONG?

Some members of the Nation choose to have a yearlong stache, however a majority of the group goes through a multi-week/month cultivation period that ends in the celebration of one glorious weekend with your cookie duster.

WHY THE JEAN SHORTS?

Jorts are hilarious.  Next question.

HOW MANY TRIPS PER YEAR DOES MOUSTACHE NATION TAKE?

The Nation dominates one college campus a year.  There are a number of smaller side trips that take place throughout the year in addition to the annual road trip.  Moustahce Nation is proud to boast a 95% attendance rate for having at least 1 member at each game throughout the entire year.

WHO/WHAT DECIDES WHERE YOU GO?

When there is a big non-conference road game on the slate it is usually a pretty clear decision where MN will head.  There have been instances where there were no non-con roadies, in which case alternate destinations were selected (see Wazzu ‘07, Washington ‘08).  Those were selected on the basis of the fact that the MN should get to those schools in those off years as to check them off the PAC 12 stadium list.

IS THERE A STACHE CONTEST EACH YEAR?

The origin of the Stache contest began in 2010 in Madison.  A trophy is created each year and is kept as a prestigious honor by that year’s champion.  The contest is stacked with fierce competitors each year – our 3 reigning champions include G Money ’10, Schmitty ’11 and Shane ’12.

WHO DECIDES THE WINNER?

Random female judges are selected differently at each campus as to remove any bias from the judging.

WHO PICKS THE JUDGES?

Our main man, Fish, is the head recruiter in this department.  He has diligently screened and recruited all three of our panels with high regard.

WHAT ARE THE CRITERIA FOR THE STACHE CONTEST?

There are no criteria.  It is 100% up to the judges as to what they deem the best Stache that year.  They could decide on a creeper stache, pencil thin, length, handle bars – whatever it is that they are feeling on that particular day.  The pattern of champions thus far has been determined by size.  You never know when that first upset will come.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

Every year is different and comes with new challenges and new expenses.  Every single dollar spent is invested into the tailgate.  Typically, an all-day tailgate, shirt and a game ticket is the package that is put together.  The costs depend on the vendors used, ticket price and whatever it takes to get the setup spot.

HOW DO I PARTAKE IN THE TAILGATE IF I AM NOT A PAID MEMBER?

Unfortunately, we are not able to provide the location of our tailgate to the general public.  Several months of planning go into this annual event and every detail is taken into consideration in order to pull off the most amazing tailgates.  All of the resources, food and beverages are calculated ahead of time based on the number of paid members.  If we opened it up to the general public, all the hard work put into this event and the game day environment we all love and look forward to would be compromised.
